Artist Statement
My photography is meant to describe the human form and human experience from multiple points of view rarely examined by most. Typically using live models or myself for my work, the subject is often that of the body. I wish to focus on intimacy and liminality, urging the viewer to take a more inward look at themselves and how they view their body from a personal, rather than societal perspective. My photography is often digital, using a DSLR camera for shoots, but I also love to experiment with film. In order to bring a more intimate vibration to my set, I often use hard, direct flash and I tend to forfeit exterior lighting sources. Though I do sometimes use a strobe or hotlight, I feel as though on-camera flash suits my work better. An artist who has inspired me since I became interested in photography is Nan Goldin, though a smaller, more recent artist who inspires me is Christian Zajicek, or @visionsofalife on instagram. The issues I address are both personal and social, as the way we view our bodies often has been impacted by societal standards and nurturing. My goal as an artist is to reach those of us uncomfortable in our own skin, and I want to veer us toward a perspective of viewing our bodies as art pieces which can help us achieve our goals, whether that be through physical activity or self expression.
